Ayurveda is a 5,000 year-old system of healing, whose roots come from Ancient India.
Ayuh means life and veda means knowledge. In Ayurveda there is an emphasis on the connection between the body, mind, and spirit and in the body’s innate ability to heal itself. The foundation for Ayurveda is in the connection between all things in the universe, both living and nonliving. Everything that exists is made up of the same five natural elements: space (ether), air, fire, water, and earth.
In order to be in perfect health, we want to bring our body, mind, and spirit back into balance. There are numerous ways to do this, but the idea is to be in rhythm with nature.
Our bodies are simply a microcosm of the universal macrocosm.
In Ayurveda, we are all made up of three doshas, or qualities. Every person has a different balance of these doshas, which are constantly in flux. Diet, lifestyle, and relationships to others are some of the ways doshas can be influenced. Each dosha is made up of two of the five elements, and has specific qualities to them.
